Express Yourself

As a male high school student, how would you feel is a fellow male classmate wore heals to school? That was the reason for concern when one Tampa Bay area high school student showed up to class in heals. After showing up in the classroom and some names were called, the teacher notified the principal of the problem and he was asked to remove the heels.  The principal states that it was for his own safety, to avoid bullying from fellow students.  I'm all about equality and freedom to dress how you like, but I feel like I have to side with the principal on this one. Each day thousands of kids are bullied, some for no reason but others for good reason. Making a spectacle of yourself at school when you know what comes with that is not a good enough reason to protest this ruling.  Kids are cruel and even though I wished we lived in a more accepting world, we don't so until the day when everyone has an open mind, kids need to be protected and reminded what a harsh world we do live in.

Royal Wedding Rocking the U.S.

People can't get enough of the royal wedding....but why? Personally, I think its interesting but I'm not one to follow it too closely. With the wedding in the upcoming week it's all you read and all you see on every website, newspaper and magazine.  So what's the problem? Let's not forget that there are still things happening in our own country and other countries are experiencing life ending catastrophies. I just think that we should get our priorities in order and help ourselves before we blow up the world's media with the royal wedding.

How will they learn?

So after Lindsay Lohan was sentenced to 120 days in jail by a Los Angeles judge, she posted bail and was released.  After paying $75,000, Lindsay was released from jail on what is considered "work release." What are we thinking?  No one learns a lesson when they can buy their way out of things as serious as jailtime. We seriously need to consider who we look up to and who we are exposing our youth to. And what message are we teaching kids? That you can buy your way out of any situation if you have the funds? Let's get real...make Lindsay stay in jail!

Animal Hoarding...

April 8, 2011--In Pendleton, Kentucky police arrived to more than they bargained for when they were called to building after complaints from neighbors.  Upon entering the building, police found 77 animals, most of which were dogs. So how many dogs it too many? The woman responsible for the property claims the animals were fed and watered, but all the animals ended up being removed.  The woman now has to appear in court for over 90 counts of animal cruelty. We all know that animal cruelty is extrememly serious, but now we can watch it on tv. Animal Planet now features a show, "Confessions: Animal Hoarding." This show documents the stories of people who are obviously animal hoarders.  It shows us that this condition not only affects people, but animals too. No animal deserves to live in such terrible conditions, which is why I'm such an advocate for the local Animal Humane Society and adopting shelter pets rather than puppy mill, pet store dogs.

$32K is $32K too much

Don't get me wrong, I'm a Jersey Shore fan but Rutgers University recently paid Nicole "Snooki" Polizzo $32,000 to speak at an on campus event. So what exactly does Snooki have to say for this amount of money, "Study hard, but party harder."  Her speech also included talk about her pouf, being a reality star and an author, and of course the GTL lifestyle.  So could our college kids go without this highly informational event? I would like to think so. In a time of rising tuition costs and a poor economy, why are we wasting money on the Jersey Shore? It makes sense to some since Jersey Shore is so popular among college students, but what did Snooki have to say that we did not already learn from the show? In my opinion, absolutely nothing.  Many students were interviewed and many expressed their feeling of disappoint as they thought about how their tuition money was being spent. And the kicker...Snooki was paid $2,000 more than Nobel Prize-winning novelist Toni Morrison to speak during commencement in May.

Is this the role model you want speaking at your kids school?

Has Glee Gone Too Far?

Hi, my name is McKenzi and I'm addicted to Glee! Yes it's true...and I have no problem admitting it. Lately, more people have been complaining about the recent episodes.  So the question arises, is Glee taking it too far? First with is first guy on guy kiss and now Santana has decided to be a lesbian. I understand that Glee is known for being edgy but will fans start to tune out each week? Our generation is more accepting of the gay/lesbian community but will the older generation protest? So far, viewers are still in the millions showing their support.  So let's hope it stays this way!
